Education has different trends and directions. School board Agora (Zaanstad) uses Bildung as the basis for their policy plan. What does this vision entail?
Bildung is a process of personal education in which children become acquainted with all cultural and social sides of the world in which they live. This model is based on four areas of life where children learn to develop themselves (socially) during daily actions and encounters:
private – in the home situation, in the family circle
private – in shops, companies
politics – in dealing with different authorities (municipality, police, etc)
public – in social institutions, associations or volunteer work
In addition, children learn to develop further through four training areas:
sports – exploring your own physical capabilities and, among other things, learning to deal with competition and discipline
art – daring to express yourself, creativity and imagination
science – learning to think, learning to ask questions and investigate
religion – learning to deal with virtues, norms and tradition
Bildung at Agora is therefore (guided) self-formation, with attention to: judgment (autonomy and self-care), humanity and compassion, solidarity and citizenship, imagination and creativity. Our ultimate goal is to provide a basis so that every child can influence themselves and society in a positive way, based on a certain integrity.
